One thing most homeowners tend to forget when taking on their own kitchen remodel is that they’ve never done it before. Mistakes are bound to happen, some could be significant and costly and other times could be small but straightforward to fix. Either way, we are always learning. Here are 5 of the common mistakes homeowners make during a remodel and how to avoid them.
UNDERESTIMATING YOUR BUDGET
One of the most common issues we encounter with our clients is handling their budget. Expenses can easily add up without you expecting it. This can be troublesome when realizing you may have to overspend midway through a project. Good advice is to save up an extra 15% of your cost estimate. This ensures if you run into any issues or plans for additional costs, you’re not overwhelmed.
NOT DOUBLE-CHECKING YOUR PERMITS
Homeowners often don’t get the required permits when starting a construction project and that can cost you dearly. However, keep in mind, you are not an expert in this, and it is your local contractor’s job to remind to have this checked before getting started.
GOING WITH THE FLOW
It’s easy to get carried away with the smallest details when remodeling a kitchen. As soon as the new countertop, island, or cabinet is installed people often want to add some tile or other modern material to best compliment their new addition. But, this unplanned addition this can end up costing you more than you first anticipated.
UNDERESTIMATING MATERIAL COSTS
When it comes to ordering materials such as flooring, siding or tile, a good rule of thumb is to order 15-20% extra, which you can always sell away or use any extra for other areas. Ordering a second batch separately may cost a lot more if not included in the original set.
This all depends on what season you plan on having your kitchen remodeled. Time is very important, and not only does that mean more money but it also can disrupt your normal daily life. You may have to cancel plans such as vacations or work parties you’ve been looking forward to. Being organized by communicating with your contractors will save valuable time down the road.
